Gertrude was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 1985. After being convicted of second-degree murder, Paula was fired in 1972.
The torture murder of 16-year-old Sylvia Likens on October 26, 1965, is the most lingering nightmare in Indianapolis real crime history.
This crime was probably a little scarier than others because, in addition to the legendary Gertrude Baniszewski, the caregiver involved several of her own children, some of whom were as young as 10, as well as other neighbourhood children and other children.
Watching her favourite TV series was a simple afternoon routine before dinner that Sylvia Likens endured for weeks or even months. There were at least a dozen youngsters present, either participating or merely observing, and none of them seemed bothered enough to alert their parents.
According to the autopsy, Sylvia Likens had over 150 distinct wounds on her body when she died, and she was also dangerously underweight. The wounds themselves differed in terms of type, location, intensity, and healing rate.
She was severely burned, bruised, and had muscle and nerve damage. Her vaginal canal was about to close. Likens also had much of her skin removed from her face, breasts, and neck, as well as all of her fingernails broken backward.
According to coroner Dr. Arthur Kebel, Likens died as a result of a subdural hematoma caused by a violent hit to her right temple.
