Emma Radukanu to win $ 2.5million for US Open win

Teenage tennis champion Emma Radukanu is set to receive $ 2.5 million from her record-breaking US Open win – more than eight times her previous career earnings.

The 18-year-old high school graduate captivated audiences this weekend when she beat Leyla Fernandez to win the women’s US Open title, becoming the first qualifier to do so.

In doing so, she not only became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title in over 40 years, but also became the youngest winner since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.

Radukanu’s $ 2.5 million prize is much higher than the $ 303,000 he has earned in his career so far.

But this is probably not the end.

Experts say that in addition to gaining competition in the future, Radukanu, who is of Chinese-Romanian descent, is also in line for lucrative sponsorship deals and endorsements.

“Emma’s age, she’s Gen Z, her dual heritage, growing profile and the global stage she finds herself on means there are great things ahead of her,” said Simon Chadwick of Emmylin Business School at BBC 5 live.

Already featured in the October issue of Vogue and with several sponsorships under his belt, Nike and Adidas are “fighting for him” at Radukanu, Chadwick said.

Sports careers can be very rewarding financially for those at the top of their game. Tennis is particularly attractive to female athletes, according to Forbes, which has nine of the highest-paid female athletes in the world.

23-year-old Naomi Osaka is currently the highest-paid female athlete in the world with a net worth of $ 37.4 million. It is estimated that a portion of that $ 34 million comes from sponsorships, or 10 times the total amount of its prize.

According to the Osaka benchmark, Radukanu’s potential gains could be huge.

Although the young athlete has been modest about her success so far, she said shortly after her victory that she would use her cash prize to afford a pair of Apple AirPods.

“I think I’ll (buy them) before I leave New York for sure,” Radukanu told Good Morning America on Monday.
