The CDC said on Friday that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine was slightly more effective than Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson at hospitalization, although the difference widens considerably four months after vaccination.

The report comes just as the FDA is considering backing a controversial plan to roll out booster shots for a full vaccination.

The data, collected from nearly 3,700 people in 21 hospitals in 18 states (including Montefiore in the Bronx) over five months, adds to a growing body of evidence that while all vaccines work well, the vaccine Moderna is the most effective over time. remains.

Overall, according to the study, the Moderna vaccine was 93% effective in preventing hospitalization for COVID in American adults without compromised immune systems. During the same study period (March 11-August 15), the Pfizer vaccine was 88% effective and the J&J vaccine was 71% effective.

But these were total numbers. The study also broke down efficacy over the 14 to 120 day period after vaccination, as well as after the 120 day mark, also known as VE. This is where the numbers differed most significantly.

The Moderna vaccine was 92% effective against hospitalization after 120 days, but the Pfizer vaccine was less than 77% effective. (There was no similar tally for the J&J vaccine, although the CDC notes that efficacy peaked at 68% after 28 days of vaccination.)

“Understanding the differences in VE by vaccine product can guide individual choices and policy recommendations regarding vaccine recalls. All COVID-19 vaccines approved or authorized by the FDA provide adequate protection against COVID-19.
