A US drone strike in Syria earlier this month killed a top al Qaeda leader, military officials said Thursday.
Salim Abu-Ahmad was ejected on September 20 as he boarded a vehicle outside the town of Idlib, and no civilians were injured, according to the Air Force Times.
“Salim Abu-Ahmad was responsible for planning, funding and approving al-Qaeda’s cross-regional attacks,” Army Major John Rigsby told the newspaper.
“There is no sign of civilian casualties as a result of the strike. The strike continues the US campaign to degrade international terrorist networks and target terrorist leaders seeking to attack the American homeland, its interests and allies abroad.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the United States was behind the September 20 attack on a terrorist belonging to a radical group linked to al-Qaeda. The province is controlled by armed rebels opposed to the government.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the attack occurred hours before an investigation was launched into the August 29 attack in Afghanistan, which killed 10 civilians.
A drone strike in Kabul targeted an aid worker who was mistaken for an ISIS-K operative.
